German giants Bayern Munich and English heavyweights Arsenal prepare to face off this Wednesday in the highly-anticipated second-leg tie of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match-up. With the scoreline tied at 2-2, this Allianz Arena showdown, scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, will decide which team will progress to the semifinals and which will bow out of the competition.

Bayern Munich head into this clash ailing, needing nothing but a UEFA Champions League semifinal spot to lick their wounds after their 11-year Bundesliga dominance was brought to an end over the weekend.

The continental powerhouses watched on helplessly as Bayer Leverkusen thrashed Werder Bremer 5-0 on Sunday to officially win the German top-flight crown, thus making this the first year since 2012 that die Roten failed to lift the Bundesliga.

This came as little surprise. Tuchel's side have lost six domestic matches this campaign already, including two out of their last three, and as a result, the former Chelsea boss is set to be relieved of his duties at the end of the season. However, he can salvage something with an impressive European campaign should they get past Arsenal.

The Germans have already faced an English powerhouse, locking horns with Manchester United in the group stage. Harry Kane and Co. won both home and away but the Gunners will be a completely different test.

This showdown comes a week after Bayern Munich came close to winning at the Emirates Stadium, with two first-half goals from former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry and Tottenham icon Harry Kane undoing Bukayo Saka's opening goal.

Unfortunately for Bayern, they were unable to hold onto that lead, instead drawing 2-2. However, they will have the iconic Allianz Arena crowd to their advantage and will want to remind everyone why they have a tremendous record against the North London outfit.

The Bundesliga side have beaten Arsenal in their last two Allianz Arena encounters by a whopping 10-2 aggregate scoreline, triumphing 5-1 in both showdowns. Can Tuchel's struggling side pull off a similar victory over the traveling Premier League club?

Arsenal, on the other hand, enter this crucial clash on the back of a gut-wrenching defeat. That came at home to Aston Villa, with the North London giants suffering an unexpected 2-0 loss against Unai Emery's side.

This occurred on Sunday, with Manchester City beating Luton Town the day before to temporarily move top of the league. However, when Liverpool lost 1-0 at Crytal Palace, Mikel Arteta's side were presented with the golden opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the Reds while reclaiming the top spot from the Cityzens.

However, Saka and Co. stumbled, conceding twice in three minutes from the 84th minute onwards thanks to goals from Leon Bailey and in-form striker Ollie Watkins.

This leaves Arsenal two points behind Man City in second, handing a huge blow to their title hopes. As a result, Arteta's men must bounce back immediately or they will risk imploding at the business end of the season yet again.

Unfortunately, this was the Gunners' second disappointing result, with the 2-2 draw at home to Bayern Munich being the first. Despite boasting the home advantage, Arsenal needed a 76th-minute goal from Leandro Trossard to rescue a draw.

While the North London giants had a late penalty shout when Manuel Neuer appeared to trip Bukayo Saka inside his own box, the Premier League side were also fortunate not to concede a spot kick earlier on. Additionally, Arteta's men have not been exceptional away from home this season in Europe, which is another cause for concern.

Arsenal have played four away games and have won only once, with that being a slim 2-1 triumph at Sevilla back in late October.

The Gunners drew one of those four away ties, a 1-1 stalemate at PSV in their last group-stage fixture, while losing two. One was the 2-1 loss at Lens while the other was the 1-0 defeat at Porto in the first leg of their round of 16 fixture. This means Arsenal have to both overcome their away struggles and their Bayern Munich hoodoo if they are to make the semifinals.

Team news

Bayern Munich: Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry are both unavailable for this game due to injuries and while Leroy Sane is likely to feature, Tuchel admitted that he is not fit and will have to play through pain due to their lack of options. Manuel Neuer, who did not feature in the 2-0 victory over Koln over the weekend, is expected to return in goal for this second leg. However, Alphonso Davies is suspended for this tie while Sacha Boey is injured.

Arsenal: Arteta has a fully fit squad bar Jurrien Timber, who is regaining fitness after suffering an ACL injury in his first competitive game for the Gunners. Martin Odegaard picked up a knock in the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa but is expected to be fine for this clash. However, there could be changes to the weekend lineup, with one of Takehiro Tomiyasu or Jakub Kiwior replacing Oleksandr Zinchenko while Jorginho or Thomas Partey could partner Declan Rice in midfield.
