Real Madrid knew they needed two goals and to keep a clean sheet if they wanted to make it to the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League unscathed, but Raphael Varane had other plans and complicated everything for the Spanish champions.
Just after nine minutes, the French center back was trying to clear the ball away from close to his net, but Gabriel Jesus was focused enough to steal the ball away from Varane to make him pay for that mistake. Eventually, Jesús passed the ball to Raheem Sterling to score the opening goal in the game.

Later, Karim Benzema would level the game and keep Real Madrid's hopes alive, but that costly mistake by Varane was not what Zidane and Co. had planned for the game.
