The young striker has been banned from playing for the Red Devils indefinitely after allegations of assaulting a woman emerged.

Manchester United have suspended Mason Greenwood after Greater Manchester Police revealed that they were investigating allegations of physical and sexual abuse made by the player's girlfriend on Sunday. The club's decision comes hours after the 20-year-old striker's lover released disturbing photos and audio alleging assault at the hands of the English striker.

In an earlier statement, United revealed that they were aware of the images circulating on social media but has since been taken off the woman's Instagram account, and were launching their own investigations into the the matter. "We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media," they said. "We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."

Another statement was subsequently issued, with the Premier League club indicating that Greenwood will no longer train or play for them "until further notice". They further highlighted their commitment to work with the police in the ongoing investigations.

The Great Manchester Police have since confirmed Greenwood's arrest after being notified of the allegations that surfaced on social media on Sunday. In a statement, they said: "Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing."
