Preview

Another round of Major League Soccer is upon us, with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami kicking off this Matchday after wrapping up the previous set of fixtures. The Florida-based franchise prepare to face D.C. United on Saturday, with the Herons making the trip to Audi Field for this 2 p.m. ET fixture.

The Leagues Cup champions enter this game on the back of a lovely result over Nashville in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Tata Martino's men locked horns with Hany Mukhtar and Co. for the second leg of this round of 16 match-up, winning 3-1 on the day.

To no one's surprise, former Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez inspired Inter Miami to victory, with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner assisting the Uruguayan for the opening goal before scoring the second — Robert Taylor also got on the scoresheet in the second half.

With the first leg ending in a 2-2 draw, Inter Miami progressed to the quarterfinals courtesy of a 5-3 aggregate win. However, things have not been perfect for Tata Martino's side domestically.

The Herons lost their most recent MLS fixture, going 2-3 down at home to Montreal in a game in which Messi was rested. The Argentine has been inspirational since joining the North American side but has struggled to maintain fitness and is even a doubt for this upcoming tie.

Messi and Co. remain top of the Eastern Conference but are level on points (7) with four other teams despite having played a game extra. D.C. United, who have one win and two draws to their name, are only two points behind and could leapfrog the visitors in the table with a win on Saturday.

Unlike Inter Miami, the Black-and-Red are unbeaten in the league so far.  The hosts kicked off the season with a lovely 3-1 victory over 10-man New England, with Christian Benteke scoring a brilliant hat-trick.

However, since then, Troy Lesesne's side have been unable to win a match. D.C. United traveled to Portland for their second game of the season and pulled off a comeback at Providence Park, going from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

After that came a trip to Cincinnati, with the 2004 MLS Cup winners drawing blanks at the TQL Stadium. Additionally, the hosts will be on the hunt for revenge, having failed to beat the Herons the last two times Inter Miami visited Audi Field (D1, L1).

Team news

D.C. United: Christian Benteke is a doubt for this game due to a hamstring issue. Mohanad Jeahze is dealing with a similar issue while Tyler Miller and club captain Steven Birnbaum are both sidelined.

Inter Miami: As mentioned earlier, Lionel Messi is expected to sit this one out due to a leg injury. That is not Tata Martino's only concern as Ian Fray, Franco Negri, Benjamin Cremaschi, Facundo Farias, and Robbie Robinson are all injured.

Key stats

  • D.C. United have lost only once to Inter Miami in seven encounters (W4, D2).

  • The Black-and-Red are unbeaten in five of their last six home matches.

  • The Herons have not won any of their last five away matches in the MLS (L3, D2).

  • However, Inter Miami are unbeaten in their last two trips to Audi Field, winning one and drawing the most recent visit.
