The third and final leg of the final went Juan Aurich's way after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Juan Aurich won the Peruvian championship for the first time after defeating Alianza Lima 3-1 on penalty kicks, in the third and final match of the title decider on Thursday. The match finished scoreless after 120 minutes.

The win was a historic achievement for Juan Aurich, as it was their first title triumph in their 89-year history. The hero of the night was goalkeeper Diego Penny, who saved two spot-kicks in the penalty shootout.

It was a very hotly contested encounter between two solid sides at a Estadio Nacional de Lima stadium that was packed with Alianza Lima fans. Despite it being an exciting match, it ended scoreless, with Juan Aurich prevailing courtesy of penalty kick assertions from Renzo Sheput, Edgar Balbuena and Colombian veteran Ricardo Ciciliano.

Alianza Lima, on the other hand, only managed to beat Penny once, through Christopher Soto, while Edgar Gonzalez fired his shot wide and efforts from Luis Trujillo and Oscar Vilchez were saved.

After Alianza Lima had won the first leg of the final 2-1 and Juan Aurich won the second leg 1-0, the title was to be decided by a third match. Both teams had their chances to win the game, but couldn't find the back of the net no matter how hard they tried.

The nearest chance for either team to break the deadlock fell to Alianza Lima youngster Paolo Hurtado in the 56th minute, but his goal-bound effort was cleared off the line by Aurich defender Nelinho Quina.

In extra time Penny pulled off a great save to deny Luis Trujillo, while at the other end Alianza goalkeeper Salomon Libman was made to stretch after a equally good opportunity fell to striker Luis Tejada, who finished the season on top of the scoring charts, with 17 goals.

With the result, Juan Aurich won their first national championship, while Alianza Lima with 22 titles, failed to close-in on arch-rivals Universitario de Deportes, with three more.

Juan Aurich will take part in Group 1 of the Copa Libertadores, along with Internacional, and two yet to be decided teams from Bolivia and Colombia. Alianza Lima will participate in Group 5, with Vasco da Gama, Nacional de Montevideo and either El Nacional or Liga de Quito of Ecuador.

Meanwhile, Sport Huancayo, Peru's final representative in the Copa Libertadores, will battle for a place in the second round of the competition with a home and away fixture against Arsenal de Sarandi.
