PSG vs Real Madrid: Will Navas get revenge against Courtois and Los Blancos?

PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas was recently asked about his thoughts on the clash with Real Madrid. After leaving Santiago Bernabeu on deadline transfer day for Parc des Princes, the goalkeeper will cross paths with his former employers when the champions of France lock horns with Los Blancos on Matchday 1 of the new Champions League season.

The Costa Rican, however, made no mention of the word revenge. “I had some amazing experiences at Madrid that form part of my career” were his words for the 13-time champions of Europe before pledging his commitment to his current club.

Nonetheless, one can’t help suspect that the 32-year-old is eager to show Real Madrid’s mistake in sacrificing him in favor of Thibaut Courtois. Navas, as he put it himself, went from winning three Champions League title in a row to being benched, but will now go head-to-head with the Belgian who ousted him.

Things have not gone well for Courtois since his arrival. While the team as a whole dropped in quality last season, their troubles were made worse by the former Chelsea man’s struggles to keep clean sheets.

A look at the stats hints that Los Merengues net was safer in Navas’ hands and not his successor. Keylor conceded 105 more goals than Courtois has at the Bernabeu but this isn’t a fair comparison given that the Costa Rican as he has 123 more games in a Real Madrid shirt than the 27-year-old.

Similarly, it would be unfair to point out that Navas (52) has 42 more clean sheets than Thibaut (10) given his appearances. However, a fair argument is the number of goals they conceded per minute.

Courtois has let in 54 goals so far, as per Transfer Market. Given that he has made 39 appearances so far, playing 3,510 minutes, he concedes approximately 1.4 goals per game – 1.38 to be precise. An even worse figure is his minutes-per-goal ratio, conceding every 65 minutes.

Keylor, on the other hand, conceded 159 goals in his 162 appearances or 14,700 minutes in a Blancos jersey. This means he conceded just below a goal-per-game – 0.98 to be precise. Furthermore, he let in a goal every 92 minutes.

Many felt that Zidane’s side made a mistake by changing their main custodian. PSG will be without several key attackers, including their Neymar-Mbappe-Cavani trio, which will work in Courtois’ favor. Nonetheless, this battle between goalkeepers will be interesting.
