Pro League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
De Belgische Pro League, ook wel bekend als de Eerste Klasse A, is de voornaamste professionele voetbalcompetitie in België. Opgericht in 1895, is deze een van de oudste voetbalcompetities ter wereld en heeft het de eer de oudste nog actieve topcompetitie van het continent te zijn. In het bijzonder nam de Belgische Pro League in 1974 als één van de pioniers in Europa een play-off systeem aan. Deze eigenschap heeft sindsdien bepaald hoe de competitie haar kampioen kiest.
Desalniettemin vertoont de Belgische topcompetitie verschillende overeenkomsten met andere grote kampioenschappen in Europa, met een competitieformaat waarin teams zowel thuis- als uitwedstrijden spelen. Bovendien hanteert de Belgische Pro League een promotie- en degradatiesysteem en degradeert het elk seizoen de minst presterende teams naar de Proximus League, de tweede divisie van het land.
Andersom verdienen de best presterende teams de felbegeerde plekken in de beste clubcompetities van de UEFA, namelijk de UEFA Champions League, evenals de UEFA Europa League en UEFA Europa Conference League.
In de loop der tijd heeft de Belgische Pro League aanzienlijke groei doorgemaakt, met clubs zoals Anderlecht, Club Brugge en Standard Luik die opmerkelijk succes hebben behaald. De vroege dominantie van de competitie was echter toe te schrijven aan de Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, die tussen 1903-04 en 1906-07 vier opeenvolgende competitietitels won en ook zes van de eerste 15 competities op zijn naam schreef.
Bovendien heeft de competitie internationale erkenning gekregen voor het ontwikkelen van wereldklasse talenten zoals Eden Hazard en Kevin de Bruyne.
In 2005 verwierf Proximus TV, voorheen bekend als Belgacom TV, de televisierechten voor de Belgische Pro League voor een bedrag van €36 miljoen per seizoen. Drie jaar later werden deze rechten doorverkocht aan de Belgacom-groep in samenwerking met de openbare omroepen VRT en RTBF voor €45,7 miljoen per seizoen.
In juni 2020 verscheen Eleven Sports op het toneel en sloot een exclusieve wereldwijde rechtenovereenkomst voor vijf jaar, van het seizoen 2020-21 tot en met 2024-25. Tegelijkertijd heeft ESPN bijgedragen aan de groei van de competitie op de Amerikaanse markt door uitzendrechten te verwerven voor de periode 2021-2025, waarbij ESPN+ live streaming aanbiedt.
