Over Serie A
Serie A History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Serie A wordt gezien als de voornaamste voetbalcompetitie van Italië en is tevens een van de oudste ter wereld, opgericht in 1898. Het huidige 'roulatie' schema is van kracht sinds het seizoen 1929/1930. Oorspronkelijk stond de Serie A onder toezicht van de Direttorio Divisioni Superiori (DDS), gevolgd door de Lega Calcio vanaf 1943. Sinds het seizoen 2010/2011 heeft de Lega Serie A het bestuur overgenomen en blijft het tot op de dag van vandaag de toezichthouder.
In de Serie A nemen 20 teams deel, waarbij elk team tweemaal tegen elk ander team speelt, wat resulteert in een totaal van 38 wedstrijden per team gedurende het reguliere seizoen. Net als andere Europese competities werkt de Serie A volgens een promotie-degradatie systeem. Aan het einde van elk seizoen worden een vastgesteld aantal (momenteel drie) van de laagst geklasseerde teams gedegradeerd naar de Serie B, terwijl een overeenkomstig aantal van de hoogst geklasseerde teams uit de Serie B promotie maken naar de Serie A.
In termen van UEFA-wedstrijden, komen zeven Serie A-teams in aanmerking voor deelname. De vier best geplaatste teams aan het einde van het seizoen kwalificeren zich voor de UEFA Champions League, terwijl het team dat op de vijfde plaats eindigt een plek krijgt in de UEFA Europa League. Dit geldt ook voor het team dat de Coppa Italia wint. Mocht de winnaar van de Coppa Italia echter al bij de top vijf horen, dan wordt de plek in de UEFA Europa League groepsfase toegekend aan het team dat als zesde is geëindigd. Het team dat de zevende plaats behaalt, krijgt een plek in de kwalificatierondes van de UEFA Europa Conference League.
Juventus is de meest succesvolle club in de geschiedenis van de Serie A. De Bianconeri hebben meer titels gewonnen dan enige andere club, waarbij AC Milan en Inter een verre tweede plaats delen.
Door de jaren heen heeft de Serie A hoogte- en dieptepunten gekend, met het 'Calciopoli'-schandaal van 2006 dat zowel Italië als de wereld schokte. Echter, recentelijk heeft het een deel van de allure en glamour herwonnen die het tot een topcompetitie maakte in de jaren negentig, met spelers als Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gianluigi Buffon, Francesco Totti en Cristiano Ronaldo die allen in de Italiaanse topdivisie hebben gespeeld. Recente nieuwkomers in de Serie A zijn onder andere Amerikaanse nationale spelers Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie en Timothy Weah, zoon van het Liberiaanse icoon George Weah.
Vóór 1980 werden uitzendrechten op voetbalwedstrijden in Italië niet aan commerciële omroepen verkocht. In plaats daarvan, werden uitzendrechten beheerd door de Italiaanse voetbalfederatie (FIGC) en de individuele clubs. De FIGC zond de wedstrijden uit op haar eigen kanalen, terwijl clubs dat ook deden, of ze werkten samen met lokale televisiestations. Echter, in 1980 begon de FIGC de uitzendrechten aan commerciële omroepen te verkopen, waarbij Rai de eerste commerciële omroep werd van de Serie A in datzelfde jaar. In de 21e eeuw verkregen andere instanties, zoals Sky en Mediaset Premium, eveneens televisie- en later livestream-rechten. Uiteindelijk veranderde DAZN het landschap toen zij in 2021 de livestream-rechten voor een meerderheid van de Serie A-wedstrijden verwierf.
