Cristiano Ronaldo's antics on the pitch earned him a round of applause after his massive goal, but those praises turned to jeers when he shoved the referee after being sent off.
Even if the red card can be discussed since he doesn't seem to dive as the referee inferred, CR7's behaviour could see him get a massive ban...or a ridiculous one, depending which side you're on.
Around the world, referees are deemed to be untouchable, but when such an event takes place, there have been different kinds of punishments for players who lose their cool.
For instance, an incident involving two Liga MX players last semester saw defender Pablo Aguilar and midfielder Enrique Triverio getting 12 and 10 match bans. Mexican refs went on strike, as they thought the punishment was "a joke." The Mexican league banned both players for an entire year, only to have their original bans upheld by the Court of Arbitrage in Sports (CAS).
In La Liga's case, there was a similar incident during the recently concluded season. Las Palmas' Roman Livaja got sent off by a hard challenge, and went on to shove the referee just like Cristiano Ronaldo did today. The player was handed a five-match ban, one for the red card and four more for shoving the ref.
Will this be Cristiano's fate, or will Real Madrid appeal the red card? While we wait for La Liga's call, don't miss the second leg of the Super Copa de España with our detailed guides.
