Chelsea will look to make it back to back wins in the Champions League as they host Rennes, who have been doing well in Ligue 1, but not so much in the UCL this season.

Preview: Chelsea vs Rennes

After a frustrating scoreless draw with Sevilla that would have felt more like two points dropped more than a point earned, Chelsea finally roared to life and pummeled Eastern European outfit Krasnodar 4-0 to earn their first win of this season's Champions League.

The Blues come into this match having strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley at the weekend, with new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner both being on the scoresheet along with defender Kurt Zouma. The win wasn't enough to help Chelsea break into the top four just yet, but it did mark the fourth straight game across all comps that Frank Lampard's men completed a match sans conceding a goal - thus demonstrating some improvement in defense.

Meanwhile, Rennes have managed to only keep one clean sheet in 11 matches this season, and have struggled on the road, especially when it comes to European competitions, where they've lost their last five. It's quite odd as their domestic form is a different story entirely - Les Rouge et Noir sit in third spot in Ligue 1, and have lost just one of their last nine games (with wins in five of those) although they do face a tough examination against current league leaders PSG this weekend.

However, they're bottom of their quartet, even behind Krasnodar, and it looks like they just may be focusing more on trying to finish as high in the Ligue 1 table as possible this season rather than make much of an effort in the Champions League. Remember, this is a team who won the Coupe de France, beating PSG, as recently as 2018. So far, they've picked up just one point, which was against Krasnodar, but at the same time, they didn't exactly lose heavily to Sevilla - just by a solitary goal.

This will be a very interesting match for shot-stopper Edouard Mendy, as he left Rennes over the summer to join Chelsea in a multi-million pound deal, so it will be the first time he comes face-to-face with his former colleagues since his move across the pond.

Team news: Chelsea vs Rennes

Chelsea: The Blues have been dealt a huge blow as American star Christian Pulisic re-aggravated his prior hamstring injury and ended up having to be withdrawn prior to the tie against Burnley. Both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Billy Gilmour will also miss out here. Reportedly, new signing Kai Havertz missed training on Tuesday for an unspecified reason and it remains to be seen if he will be involved in this upcoming match.

Rennes: Both Daniele Rugani and Eduardo Camavinga are set to miss this upcoming fixture due to injury.
