Real Madrid president reveals the reason for last season's struggles

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has explained the cause of his side's shortcomings last season. In the yearly meeting with the club's socios, he stated that the lack of intensity in the side was what led the Merengue's dynasty to crumble in the previous campaign.

Having won three successive UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid was unexpectedly eliminated from the Round of 16 of last season's competition by Ajax. On the domestic front, the Whites did very little to secure a silverware, missing out on both the Copa del Rey and La Liga titles to bitter rivals Valencia and Barcelona respectively.

It was the first time since the 2014/2015 season that the Bernabeu outfit had failed to clinch at least one of the three major titles and, according to Florentino Perez, it was only as a result of the team lacking the fuel to carry on as a result of its previous exploits.

"It clearly wasn't the season we wanted and hoped for, we have to understand that this team won it all but it's true that we lacked the intensity needed to keep winning," he said.

"Be sure that we will change what happened.

"We have to do the necessary changes and our challenge is to win in this competitive and complex scenario.

"Of course we're hungry, we enjoyed a very successful period and the players deserve our respect because nobody managed to win three straight Champions League titles and these players and this coach achieved it," he added.
