Less than a week ago, Benfica earned their 34th Primeira Liga title after thrashing Maritimo 4-1 at the Estádio da Luz, which again broke their previously established record of 33. And, against the very same opponents, they have the opportunity to make it an unprecedented sixth double in defending their Taça da Liga trophy to give Benfiquistas something else to celebrate after crashing out of the Champions League earlier this season.
Well, Maritimo, who are in their first ever Taça da Liga final after shocking Porto - and those who wanted an "O Classico" final - will certainly enjoy spoiling the party for the Portuguese champions. However, Ivo Vieira's men have not enjoyed playing against the Águias, having lost both times in the league with an aggregate score of eight goals conceded versus one scored. In fact, the last time the Verde-Rubros beat Benfica was nearly two years ago in August 2013.
Yet, despite this clear advantage, Benfica defender Jardel has encouraged his teammates not to take their opponents lightly, regardless of how it seems like it should be a straightforward win for the team who made it through the cup without conceding a single goal.
"Each game has a different story. Just because we beat Maritimo twice in the league does not mean that we will beat them in the final of the League Cup," the 29-year-old Brazilian noted.
"It will not be an easy game as they have a lot of quality."
Unfortunately for the current Taça da Liga holders, they will have to make do without one of their key players for tomorrow's game:
Benfica inform Salvio suffered an injury to his right knee ligaments, and that the need for surgery is likely. Get well soon @totosalvio8
— Planet Benfica (@planetbenfica) May 25, 2015
The Argentinian striker has netted 13 goals and provided 11 assists so far for Benfica this season and as a result of his excellent displays has been linked with several clubs across Europe, including Liverpool. Whether a move to another league this summer will come to pass is a whole other story entirely, but both Benfica and Maritimo will be seeking to make history tomorrow evening.
