Antoine Griezmann had what was a memorable night cut short after being sent off for a poor tackle in the second half of Atletico Madrid's Champions League encounter . The 30-year-old Frenchman got Atletico back into the game with the Reds but received a straight red for a high foot on Liverpool's Roberto Firmino.
It was a frantic encounter at the Wanda Metropolitano and it was Liverpool who looked to be running away with the win after scoring twice in the first 13 minutes through Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita. However, the resilient hosts put in another fight to crawl right back into the game and it was Antoine Griezmann who did the trick for the Madrid club with a double of his own before the first half break. In effect, the former Barcelona striker drew level with Olivier Giroud as France's fifth highest all-time goalscorer in continental club competition, with 35 goals.
Nevertheless, the opportunity for the Griezmann to potentially grab a hat-trick was relinquished with his high foot on Firmino catching the attention of the video assistant and leading to his subsequent sending off. The Atleti man has now become the first player in UEFA Champions League history to score twice and be sent off in the same game.
