There were 24. There are now only eight left. Meet your UEFA Euro 2016 quarter-finalists: Belgium, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Wales.

Along with Portugal, Wales are probably the luckiest team left in the competition in the sense that they advanced at the expense of minnows Northern Ireland thanks to a 75th minute own goal by Gareth McAuley. Meanwhile, Portugal played arguably the most boring game of the tournament so far and surprisingly pushed Croatia all the way to a goalless 90 minutes. In extra-time, Quaresma’s 117th winning goal came from Cristiano Ronaldo’s only shot on target in the entire 120 minutes. Call this pure genius, luck or perhaps cruelty in football.

The fact remains that both Portugal and Wales qualified and will face Poland and Belgium respectively in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals. As for the latter, they are on fire. They’ve netted eight goals in their last three games – half of those coming against Hungary in the Round of 16. Eden Hazard has been showcasing leadership on the pitch. His duel against Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale should be a mouthwatering one!

In Lyon, Atletico Madrid talisman Antoine Griezmann was the savior of the day as his second half brace canceled Pogba’s conceded penalty error. The Euro 2016 hosts will now face a stiff test in the form of surprise package Iceland, in the Last 8 at the Stade de France.

Speaking about that Paris-based venue, it is where Italy knocked out European champions Spain on Monday. De Gea produced an excellent performance in post as veteran Iker Casillas had to participate from the bench as a spectator. However, the Man United goalie could not prevent Chiellini from breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Then came Pelle to bury the Spaniards with his 90th minute goal to round up Italy’s historic 2-0 victory. The Azzurri march on to the quarter-finals where they are meant to face Germany. The latter finally found their flow and rhythm in the Last 16 as they demolished Hamsik’s Slovakia 3-0 with wonder goals from Jerome Boateng, Mario Gomez and Julian Draxler.
