Although the latest iteration of Ligue 1 football isn't upon us just yet, the league's organizers are quite busy effecting some big changes that will be taking place just a couple years down the line. The 2020/21 campaign was a very exciting one for fans as Lille won their first title in a decade, thus ending PSG's largely undisputed reign as champions of France.
Starting in the 2023/24 term, French football's top tier will have a very different look. Namely, the number of teams competing in Ligue 1 will be reduced from 20 to just 18. As of now, the Bundesliga are the only one of Europe's "Big Five" leagues to have 18 teams featuring.
The reduction of teams in Ligue 1 means that Ligue 2 will grow in size. As things stand, the second level also has 20 teams featuring, but in order for only 18 to participate in Ligue 1, Ligue 2 will thus have two extra teams.
The move garnered pretty much unanimous support from the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), with more than 97 percent voting in favor of the transition, which will actually start in the 2022/23 season. At the end of that campaign, four teams will be relegated to Ligue 2 while just two will receive promotion from the second tier, as opposed to the three dropped, three promoted that has been the case for quite some time.
