The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup resumes on June 30th with a double header featuring Houston Dash-Utah Royals and OL Reign-Sky Blue.

Preview: Houston Dash vs Utah Royals

Houston Dash had a very disappointing campaign last term as they finished seventh in the league and didn't qualify for the post-season playoffs. In fact, James Clarkson's side only won seven of their 24 games and were never able to win more than two games back to back during a rather frustrating term. As such, they will hope to use this upcoming tournament to try to get up and running ahead of the 2020 NWSL season.

As for the Utah Royals, they finished in sixth spot, with ten wins out of their 24 matches and also thus missed out on the post-season play-offs. To complicate matters, they're missing several key players due to injury, including Kelley O'Hara and Mallory Weber, while Aminata Diallo is in quarantine. In addition, other stars like Christen Press and Becky Sauerbrunn aren't even taking part in this tournament as new coach Craig Harrington will have to figure out to field his strongest starting XI from a largely young and untested squad.

Still, with eight teams featuring instead of nine following Orlando Pride's withdrawal, everyone does have a chance to progress to the next round, and that may take some of the pressure off both teams as they look to use this competition as a good primer for the upcoming season.

Preview: OL Reign vs Sky Blue

OL Reign concluded last term in fourth spot which was enough to secure a post-season play-offs berth, but they weren't able to get past the semi-finals juncture. They'll be seeking to have a huge impact at this upcoming tournament as they lock horns with Sky Blue, who, by contrast, endured a miserable 2019 season and finished second from last in the table with just five wins out of 24 games played.

The biggest absence for Reign, of course, is Ballon d'Or Feminin winner and team skipper Megan Rapinoe, who has opted to skip this tournament. Although she's not injured, she reportedly has her concerns about the tournament's congested fixture list as well as the potential spread of COVID-19, so has decided to refrain from participating, which was a big disappointment for coach Farid Benstiti.

Meanwhile, Sky Blue will be missing fellow World Cup winner Carli Lloyd, with the veteran attacker struggling with a knee injury that will keep her on the sidelines, so both teams will be missing their respective captains for this competition. In addition to Lloyd, Sky Blue also has injuries in defense to Madison Tiernan and Caprice Dydasco meaning that they'll have to further tinker with their starting XI ahead of this competition.
