Manchester United could find themselves in a defensive crisis in December.

Manchester United will be without their two key players when they host Tottenham Hostpur at Old Trafford on Sunday. The England duo of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw have been ruled out due to injury. When asked about the availability of the duo ahead of the much-anticipated match at Old Trafford, Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho is quoted on the club’s official website as saying:

"Not Sunday, no."

He then added:

"Let's hope Smalling can recover in time to replace him in the squad because, with so many matches, we need players. At the moment, we have Phil Jones, Bailly and Marcos Rojo [as centre-backs]. We play Tottenham, West Brom and Reading, West Ham away [among others] - in that period we have a lot of matches and it is important to have players."

However, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Michael Carrick could be available for selection after missing the Ukraine trip on Thursday when the Red Devils beat hosts Zorya Luhansk 2-0 thanks to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the ever-green Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Wayne Rooney also returns from suspension, while Juan Mata could be unavailable after picking up what seemed to be a knock against the Ukrainian outfit.
