The player is well-known by United coach Louis Van Gaal, who coached him during the 2014 World Cup.

Louis Van Gaal is already planning ahead for next season, and one of his first transfers could be a player that he knows first-hand. PSV Eindhoven's techincal director Marcel Brands revealed today the Red Devils have been scouting the 21-year old Memphis Depay, with the intention of signing him in the upcoming transfer window.

Depay has been key for PSV Eindhoven this season, scoring 20 goals in 26 matches so far. The Farmers secured their first championship in seven years last Saturday after defeating Heerenveen 4-1, with Depay scoring the second goal of his team.

Brands stated that the club dismissed an offer for Depay prior to last summer's World Cup. Tottenham Hotspur presented a 15 million pound offer for the wingman's services, but the club refused to sell at the time.

"It's true there has been contact with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain and a third, big European club. But this time we are talking about bigger amounts of money," Brands added.

The 21-year old had his breakthrough year last season, after being called up to the Dutch team for the first time back in 2013. Then, Van Gaal gave him a spot in the 23-man squad that played the World Cup last year, where he scored two goals during the group stage of the tournament. He was nominated to the "Best Young Player Award", but ended up losing to Paul Pogba.
