Bayern’s Ivan Perisic reveals how close he came to joining Man Utd

The Croatian ace opened up about his failed move to Old Trafford.

Ivan Perisic is currently adapting to life in the Bundesliga. Two months from when Antonio Conte announced to the world that the Croatian does not fit in his plans at Inter Milan, the winger has made only four appearances for Bayern Munich and as had a role in three goals, scoring two and assisting one.

However, things could have been totally different for the 30-year-old. The former Serie A ace was once a highly-sought-after figure in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho’s desire to bring him to Old Trafford was no kept secret.

And while a move to Man United never materialized, Perisic has only opened up about his failed move now. Speaking to the Athletic (as per the Sun), he revealed in details how close he came to a move to England.

“How close was I to going [to Man Utd]? Very close,” Ivan revealed.

“It was an amazing thing for me when Jose called me. It was difficult to say no to him.

"In fact, I really, really wanted to join him and play for United. It was a dream of mine to play in all the big leagues.

"But it didn’t happen. It was painful for me. But I don’t want to go into the details.

"I only found out myself the real reasons two years later.”

The player remained at San Siro but despite this, his Inter Milan career would take a turn for the worse. He began being linked with Arsenal and a move to China but a return to the German top-flight was the inevitable outcome.

Things did not turn out bad. While the Nerazzurri are flying high under Conte, Perisic ended up at one of Europe’s biggest clubs: Bayern Munich.

However, the winger admits that fortune was on his side. An injury to Leroy Sane meant the Bavarians were unable to land their number one target, clearing the path for his Allianz Arena switch.

“We are talking about Bayern, one of best five clubs in the world,” Perisic added.

“They always have three, four or five possibilities for every position they’re interested in. I was not the first.

"It happened very quickly. Everyone knows the story: after Sane got injured, the club contacted Inter and then my agent.

"I thought about it with my family for one night. Then I agreed.”

Bayern Munich have begun their title defense well and are currently leading the table in the Bundesliga with 14 points from their opening six games. In Europe, Kovac’s men began their Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win over Crvena Zvezda and are preparing to take on Tottenham this Tuesday.
