Hansi Flick's men enter their final group stage game knowing anything but a win will see them bow out of Qatar 2022. Do not miss this clash!

No one would have expected Germany to enter their final FIFA World Cup group stage match fearing an early exit but this is the dilemma they find themselves in. The European giants take on Costa Rica on Thursday in Group E knowing this Al Bayt Stadium could end in a shocking elimination.

The 2014 World Cup winners did not enjoy the best of starts. Hansi Flick's men, who were tipped to qualify out of their group alongside Spain, kicked off their campaign with a now unforgettable showdown with Japan.

Gundogan and Co. dominated the Asian giants in the first 45 minutes but faced a familiar issue – the lack of a world-class no.9 meant the Germans failed to convert their opportunities into goals.

Nonetheless, the UEFA heavyweights entered the break with a 1-0 lead but that came courtesy of a penalty, which Ilkay converted. But just like the Saudis showed against Argentina, a one-goal advantage is a difficult lead to defend in this competition.

The Samurai Blue grew into the game in the second half and in the final 15 minutes of normal time, Germany conceded twice en route to a historic 2-1 loss. Fortunately,  the four-time World Cup winners dodged a huge bullet in the second round of fixtures.

Japan would have secured progression to the round of 16 with a win in their second game but the AFC powerhouse lost 1-0 to Costa Rica, Meanwhile, Flick's men took on Spain and played out a thrilling 1-1 draw, granting them one more chance at qualifying.

Niclas Füllkrug came on as a sub and scored in the final 10 minutes to secure a point for Germany. Nonetheless, depending on this game and the Japan vs. Spain result, the Germans will either suffer embarrassment or be spared their blushes.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, can pull off the unthinkable and both eliminate Germany from this competition and secure progression to the round of 16.

The CONCACAF side kicked things off in a far worse manner, with Navas and Co. suffering a horrendous 7-0 defeat against Spain. At the time, many expected Los Ticos to bow out by round two but their unexpected 1-0 victory over Japan sparked life back into their campaign.

Keysher Fuller grabbed the only goal for Luis Fernando Suarez's side, winning the Man of the Match award along the way. The Costa Ricans limited Japan to very few opportunities, which was impressive, but repeating this against Musiala, Muller, Sane, and Gnabry will be a tougher ask.

Team news

Costa Rica: The CONCACAF outfit cannot name an identical lineup as Francisco Calvo is suspended after picking up a second consecutive yellow in the win over Japan. Juan Pablo Vargas should spearhead Los Ticos' back five while Jewison Bennette will be pushing for a start.

Germany: Leroy Sane is back to full fitness, having played in the 1-1 draw with Spain, and will be gunning for a start. Meanwhile, Niclas Füllkrug, the goalscorer in that 1-1 draw should also get the nod while Nico Schlotterbeck will be fighting to return to the lineup.

Permutations

For the Germans, anything but a win will see them exit the tournament. If Flick's side triumph, then it becomes a question of who they can leapfrog. If Japan lose to Spain, then the two European giants will go through. If La Furia Roja and the Samurai Blue draw, then it will go down to goal difference. If Japan win, then it will be down to the two UEFA powerhouses.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, have a horrible goal difference and thus cannot rely on matching Japan's result. If Los Ticos draw and the Samurai Blue lose to Spain, then the CONCACAF outing will go through. If the Central American nation win, they are through as both Japan and Spain would not be able to match their six-point tally.
