Real Madrid will look to put their Copa Del Rey disappointment behind and get a favorable result when they travel to take on Alaves on Saturday.

Match preview

Real Madrid will have their sights set on returning to winning ways following a disappointing week in which they picked up defeats in the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa Del Rey. Los Blancos were denied the opportunity to feature against Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana after suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Athletic Club in the semi-final of the competition. Six days later, Zinedine Zidane's men were dealt another shock 2-1 defeat, this time coming against Segunda División B side Alcoyano in the Copa Del Rey Round of 32.

Having missed out on the prospect of winning either of these two trophies, Real Madrid will now turn their full focus to mounting a successful La Liga title defense. So far, the Santiago Bernabeu outfit is within range of doing so despite trailing Atletico Madrid on the league log. The Merengues, having accumulated 37 points after 18 appearances, sit seven points behind their crosstown rivals who could extend the lead further with a game in hand. The deficit can be partly attributed to the poor performances by the side that resulted in them dropping points against Elche and Osasuna in two of their last three league outings.

The circumstances under which Madrid drew away to the two aforementioned clubs raised a lot of eyebrows, especially considering the fact that they boast the second-best away record in the league. With the pair having laid the blueprint on how to take points off Zinedine Zidane's side, Alaves will approach Saturday's game with the desire to upset the odds and deepen the wounds of the capital club.

Indeed, the stakes are high for El Glorioso as a defeat against the league's defending champions could see them drop to the relegation zone. A rather tough start to the season has seen them fighting for survival as they currently sit in the 17th position with 18 points after 19 matches. Not much has gone the way of Abelardo Fernández's men who are now chasing their first victory in four successive outings. In the grand scheme of things, they have only managed three wins in their last 10 matches, losing six and drawing one.

Team news

Alaves will be without Rodrigo Ely when they take on Real Madrid as he is yet to recover from his foot injury. Lucas Perez is expected to return to the side after regaining full fitness following an ankle problem.

For Real Madrid, Rodrygo Goes is out of contention with a knee injury while defender Nacho also remains in isolation after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus. Dani Carvajal is ruled out of the clash while Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, who picked up slight knocks in the Super Cup defeat to Athletic Club, are expected to return to the starting lineup on Saturday.

Predicted starting XI

  • Deportivo Alaves: Pacheco; Navarro, Laguardia, Lejeune, Duarte; Mendez, Battaglia, Pina, Rioja; Joselu, Perez

  • Real Madrid: Courtois; Vazquez, Ramos, Varane, Mendy; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Asensio, Benzema, Hazard.
