The Reds will host Burnley at Anfield on Thursday night as they look to return to winning ways.

Match preview

Liverpool will welcome Burnley to Anfield as they look for their first Premier League win in 2021. The Reds, since their 7-0 demolishing of Crystal Palace ahead of Christmas, have failed to pick up any more three points despite making four more league appearances during the period. The most recent league outing was against Manchester United where the Merseysiders had to settle for a 0-0 scoreline although the tale could have been different in the end but for the heroics of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp and his men will go into Thursday's encounter inspired by their 4-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round. So far, they have only been on the losing side on just one occasion in their last 12 appearances in all competitions, winning six and drawing the remaining five games. In that, the Reds' incredible unbeaten home record in the league also remains intact, having been extended to 68 with the draw against Manchester United.

Despite having a host of players absent through injury, Liverpool should still have enough quality personnel available to get the better if Burnley. However, their goal scoring form in the league would have to see an improvement, having scored just one in the last four games. Against a Burnley side that boast the seventh-best defensive record in the league, this could prove crucial to the final outcome of the game.

The Clarets have endured a torrid time so far and are currently fighting hard to survive relegation. Sean Dyche's men sit in 17th position in the league with just 16 points from 17 appearances. They have won only four games this season, drawing four and losing the remaining nine.

Having picked up points against Arsenal, Wolves and Aston Villa, Burnley have been far from consistent. They have picked up four wins in their last 10 outings, losing four and drawing two. They enter the upcoming clash with Liverpool off the back of successive 1-0 defeats against Manchester United and West Ham. But having held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw in July, Sean Dyche will undoubtedly be glad if his men could produce a result of that sort.

Team news

Liverpool will welcome Joel Matip to the starting lineup after the defender recovered from a foot injury. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota and Naby Keita still remain out of contention.

For Burnley, the availability of Jimmy Dunne, Charlie Taylor and Bailey Peacock-Farrell is in doubt ahead of the trip to Liverpool. Like the opponents they face, the Clarets have no player suspended for Thursday's clash.

Predicted starting XI

  • Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Henderson, Thiago, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane

  • Burnley: Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters; Brady, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil; Barnes, Wood.
