Preview: Dortmund vs Bayern

Four points. That is what divides Dortmund from Bayern, and simply put, the hosts cannot afford for that gap to widen any further. Having lost the earlier Klassiker fixture this season, Lucien Favre knows that his men must win this game. A draw may also give them a glimmer of hope in finally ending Bayern's unprecedented dominance as kings of the Bundesliga, but a defeat will see them slip seven points behind. Barring an epic collapse, there will be no way die Schwarzgelben will be able to fight their way back into the title race.

What is especially worrying perhaps for Dortmund fans is not only have their team lost the last two Klassiker Bundesliga meetings (this does not include DFB-Pokal or DFL-Supercup clashes) but also Dortmund have failed to score in both. Yes, both defeats (5-0) and the most recent, (4-0) were played at the Allianz Arena, but it nonetheless is not a very comfortable statistic. In fact, Dortmund have won just two of their last ten Klassiker meetings with die Roten, while losing a whopping seven.

It wasn't always like this, though. During the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons, Dortmund won all of their Klassiker Bundesliga clashes against Bayern, both home and away. In the 2012/2013 term, the two ties resulted in draws. But after that campaign, the tide began to change in Bayern's favor, and from then on, Dortmund would win just three Klassiker ties. The last and only victory die Schwarzgelben had at the Allianz Arena was on April 12, 2014 (3-0). That being said, they did record a 3-2 win over Bayern at home last season, so certainly home pitch comforts could play a role here. Dortmund notably have lost just one of their last four Klassiker matches at home - so could that give them the boost they need?

The hosts come into this game having scored six goals and conceded none from their first two games back following the interruption due to COVID-19. Four of those goals were against Schalke in the Ruhr Derby, and they looked pretty solid during their 2-0 win over Wolfsburg last weekend. Bayern, meanwhile, were up to the task against Eintracht Frankfurt, picking up three more points in a 5-2 win, although Hansi Flick won't be pleased with some defensive errors that did give Eintracht a faint glimmer of hope of forcing their way back into the game.

Bayern are unbeaten so far in 2020, which makes them the only team yet to suffer a defeat since the start of the current year. However, Dortmund are the only team yet to lose on home turf. This will truly be an interesting battle as one side will be gunning for revenge and redemption, and the other will be keen on asserting their dominance and firmly shutting the door on the title race. There is, of course, the curious sub-plot of two "battling" strikers: Robert Lewandowski and Norwegian youngster Erling Haaland.

Which side will emerge triumphant? Or will their efforts cancel each other out in the first Klassiker stalemate since March 5, 2016?
