The north London giants will travel to the Reds on Sunday but the numbers don't back Emery's men.

Saturday sees Arsenal travel to Liverpool for a highly-anticipated showdown. For the Reds, it’s an opportunity to show their intent of winning the league early on. For the Gunners, however, it’s a whole different story as the north London giants look to put to rest a terrible record at Anfield.

And when we say terrible, it is an understatement. Everyone remembers the 5-1 thrashing Emery’s men received in Merseyside last season like it was yesterday, with Firmino bagging a hat-trick and Salah and Mane adding one each.

That wasn’t the only time Arsenal suffered embarrassment in a visit to Liverpool. In fact, they lost 4-0 in the Anfield visit prior to that. A statistic that best depicts the Gunners’ recent form at the Reds’ famous ground is that they are winless in their last six trips there.

Four defeats, two draws, and 22 goals conceded is how things stand. Their last win at Anfield was almost seven years ago, with Podolski and Cazorla finding the back of the net. The German is now retired and the Spaniard has since moved on to Villarreal after a near career-ending injury.

Away form aside, the Emirates Stadium side are without a win in their last eight encounters with England’s most successful club, last winning 4-1 at home in 2015. However, their Anfield form is but a chapter in the book that is their horrendous displays against their top-six rivals when on the road.

Last season, Aubameyang and Co. failed to beat any of the top six when away from home. Defeats to Man City and Liverpool were expected, and the 3-2 loss at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 2 was unfortunate. However, there were no excuses for the 2-2 and 1-1 draws at Old Trafford and Spurs.

The fact that Emery’s back-four remains shaky doesn’t help. Going forward, the Gunners can be a nuisance for any side.  In defense, however, they look susceptible to always conceding against the run of play and their wins against Newcastle and Burnley were proof of that.

David Luiz should adapt to his new club with time and Torreira’s fitness is improving by the day. Nonetheless, a lot more is at stake in Saturday’s game for Arsenal than three points. Victory would put an end to their winless Anfield run but most importantly, it would send out a message that the Gunners are no longer a side to be bullied.
