The Reds will be eyeing a return to winning ways when they welcome the Blades to Anfield on Saturday.

Match preview Defending champions Liverpool will welcome Sheffield United to Anfield on Saturday in search of their fourth win of the Premier League season. The Reds, just like the opponents they face, have endured a turbulent start to the new league season. With many anticipating a potential title defense, Jurgen Klopp's men - who were unbeaten in their first 28 fixtures last season - have already recorded their first defeat in just five outings.

Recently, a disappointing performance against Aston Villa resulted in the Anfield outfit shipping seven goals and responding with just two at Villa Park. This was followed by a 2-2 draw with Everton in the local derby before a 1-0 away win at Ajax fetched the Merseysiders their first three points of the new Champions League season.

Despite the challenges and persisting injuries in the squad, Liverpool still remain favourites ahead of Saturday's encounter against a Sheffield side that has managed just a draw in five appearances. Chris Wilder's men, having shown much promise last season as a group ready to compete at the top level, are yet to hit the ground running this term.

Up until last weekend's 1-1 home draw with Fulham, the Blades were without a win or a point in any of their five matches played in all competitions so far. In the Premier League, they rank in 19th and have shipped seven goals while scoring just two. As a result, there is not much optimism about their chances to get the better of an embattled Liverpool side.

Team news

Virgil van Dijk will be on the sidelines to cheer on his teammates after suffering a potentially season-ending ACL injury in the previous clash with Everton. It will be the first time in 76 games that the Dutch center back will be amiss in defense since arriving at Anfield in January 2018.

New signing Konstantinos Tsimikas (thigh) and midfield star Alex Oxlade Chamberlain (knee) are also expected to sit out this game. Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Joel Matip are all a doubt although a positive update from the Reds' camp suggests that goalkeeper Alisson Becker could potentially return and replace Alisson in goal.

For Sheffield United, Max Lowe is expected to miss out after suffering a head injury in the draw with Fulham. O'Connell, John Fleck and Lys Mousset are also not expected to be involved in the game.

Predicted starting XI

  • Liverpool possible starting lineup: Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Fabinho, Robertson; Thiago, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Mane

  • Sheffield United possible starting lineup: Ramsdale; Basham, Ampadu, Egan; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood, Berge, Stevens; McBurnie, Brewster.
