The Serie A champions kick off their European campaign away to Atletico in a repeat of last season's roller-coaster showdown.

When asked about Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Simeone could not but praise the Portuguese icon’s goalscoring. “It’s difficult to play against him. He is a goal animal. He has achieved tremendous records,” were El Cholo’s word ahead of Atletico Madrid’s run-in with Juventus.

This description of the 34-year-old could not be more accurate given his record against the Spanish giants. The Serie A champions kick off their European campaign with an away test to Los Rojiblancos, a team the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has a history of haunting.

Having spent nine seasons with Real Madrid, he was always bound to be public enemy number one for Atletico. However, even after leaving the Madrid capital, Ronaldo infamously showed Simeone’s men who’s boss when they crossed paths in this very competition last season.

Atletico drew Juventus in the round of 16 in 2018/19 and after winning 2-0 at home, Diego Costa and Co. appeared destined for a quarter-final berth. Unfortunately, Cristiano, who was severely taunted at the Wanda Metropolitano, had something to say about the scoreline.

He went on to score a memorable hat-trick in the return league, guiding the Old Lady to a 3-2 aggregate win. That took his tally against Atletico Madrid to a staggering 25 goals in what was his 33rd encounter with them.

Cristiano’s record vs Atletico

With eight assists under his belt, the former Man United winger has contributed to 33 goals in those 33 encounters, thus averaging one per game. On top of that, he has only been on the losing side against Los Rojiblancos on nine occasions.

Two of those nine defeats came in Europe, once in the 2016/17 quarter-finals and the other time being last season’s round of 16. It should be noted that despite those defeats, Ronaldo’s team went on to progress nonetheless.

This all makes for a worrying read for Atletico. The additions of Joao Felix has been great and with three wins from their first four league games, things have been going well for Simeone’s side. However, unless they find a way to halt the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer, they will be in for a rough 90 minutes.
