Los Rojiblancos are keen on recruiting the out-of-favor Real Madrid star.

Atletico Madrid could potentially complete a sensational swoop for Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, according to reports from Spain. The 28-year-old playmaker who was seemingly set for a move to Serie A outfit Napoli is ready to make a U-turn after expressing his desire to stay in Spain.

The arrival of Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid has done very little to help James Rodriguez' playing chances and the Colombian midfielder still remains out of favor in the French manager's books. The former FC Porto and AS Monaco star spent the previous two seasons playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga but opted against making his switch permanent amid claims of a fallout with the club's hierarchy.

Earlier this summer, multiple reports suggested that Rodriguez was keen on reuniting with his former manager Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli. Personal terms had been agreed and a deal was believed to be close. However, on Sunday, Spanish publication Marca revealed that the 28-year-old midfielder is keen on remaining in La Liga and is open to joining Real Madrid's cross-town rivals Atletico.

While Los Rojiblancos have already snatched Marcos Alonso from Los Blancos this summer, a high-profile transfer of this sort will be difficult to broker with the Bernabeu outfit uninterested in allowing the player to move to a close rival. Instead, Zidane's side is in favor of James potentially moving to Napoli.

The Serie A club has asked to sign the Colombian on an initial loan with an option to buy and the deal is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks.
