A five-goal thriller, a stunning and unexpected win for the home side, two stunning goals, two blunders, and a buzzing home support – Saturday's West Ham vs Chelsea showdown had everything!
The two London sides kicked off Matchweek 15, facing off in Saturday's early tie. The Hammers, who were the hosts, welcomed the Premier League leaders with the aim of returning to winning ways in their bid to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.
Thomas Tuchel's crew, on the other hand, looked to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Man Utd last weekend. Unfortunately, the champions of Europe did not get the result they wanted, losing 3-2 in the trip to the London Stadium.
The Blues got off to a great start, breaking the deadlock courtesy of a Thiago Silva header. However, a blunder from Jorginho and Edouard Mendy resulted in a penalty for the Hammers, which Lanzini converted in the 40th minute.
Four minutes later, Mason Mount restored the visitors' lead via a brilliant strike. The Englishman received a lovely cross from Hakim Ziyech, which he struck on the volley to slot past Fabianski. And that's how the half ended.
The second half, however, was all about West Ham as Moyes' men went hunting for a comeback. Their first break came right before the hour mark, with Jarrod Bowen blasting in a lovely curving shot into the Chelsea net to pull the home side level. And in emphatic style, the hosts got the winner with only three minutes of normal time left.
And it came via an unlikely source: Arthur Masuaku. Albeit unintentional, the Congolese defender caught Mendy off his line and scored past his near post due to a mishit cross. Watch the winning goal in the videos below (clips are geo-restricted).
This result leaves Chelsea in a tricky situation as they could drop to third if Liverpool and Man City win their respective fixtures. Meanwhile, West Ham have strengthened their claim on the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot with this statement victory.
