El Tri need a win to keep their spot in the next round, but the South African side will not go down without a fight even if their hopes to make the KO stage are slim.

Mexico and South Africa lock horns in their last group stage game in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics football tournament with different goals in their mind. Both teams still have a chance to make the next round, but due to their results in their past games, each team will need different things to book a spot in the KO stage.

South Africa make it to this game with no points after two games. Their first game ended in a one-nil loss to Japan, while the second one concluded in a 4-3 defeat to France. If the South Africans want to make the next round, they will have to win by over two goals and hope for France to loss against Japan. Any other outcome in this game will see them eliminated from the tournament.

Mexico enter this game with one win and one loss in the competition. El Tri played their first game against France, who they beat 4-1. Unfortunately for them, their second match ended in a 2-1 defeat against Japan, which now forces them to win their game to keep them in the race for a spot in the KO stage. Surprisingly, they could also make it to the next round if they earn a draw, but for that to happen, France must not win their game against Japan.

South Africa will enter this game with a full squad to choose from, as none of their players have been suspended or have been ruled out due to injuries. There are two South African players at risk of being banned if they made it to the next stage: goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

On the other hand, Mexico will have to deal with two absences as Johan Vasquez and Erick Aguirre have been ruled out of this game. Vászquez will sit this one out after being sent off against Japan, while Aguirre has been ruled out due to a muscular injury. Alexis Vega, Jorge Sánchez, César Montes, and César Rodríguez are one yellow card away from being banned, which will force them to avoid any harsh challenges to prevent any bookings and add problems to Mexico's run in the tournament.

This will be the first game between these teams in the Olympic Football Tournament. South Africa will try to make the KO stage of the competition for the first time in history, while Mexico will want to return to the next round after being eliminated after three games in the 2016 edition.
