A win would book the European champions a ticket to next year's tournament. Check out our match preview for more info.

What is the form of Luxembourg compared to Portugal?

To put it simply, Luxembourg’s form is nothing short of horrendous. They have lost their last six games and have won only once in their last 10 fixtures, drawing twice and losing all the others.

Portugal, in comparison, won their most recent game 6-0 over Lithuania and have lost only once in their last 15 matches in all competitions, winning nine and drawing five.

Luxembourg vs Portugal head-to-head record

Unsurprisingly, Portugal boast the superior head-to-head record. In fact, the reigning European champions have won their last nine encounters with Luxembourg, last losing to their opposition back in October 1961.

Games played: 16

Luxembourg wins: 14

Portugal wins: 1

Draws: 1

Preview

This is Portugal’s final Euro 2020 qualifier. With third-placed Serbia sitting only a point behind, the champions of Europe know they must win this game in order to defend their title. A would is all they need but a draw would suffice if Serbia stumble against the already-qualified Ukraine.

All eyes will be on one man: Cristiano Ronaldo. The 34-year-old icon scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 in over Lithuania to take his tally with the national team to 98 goals. Two more goals and he will become only the second player in history after Iranian legend Ali Daei (109) to score 100 goals for his national team.

Knowing Ronaldo, he is likely eyeing the record of becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in international games. Given Luxembourg’s form, he will likely cross the century mark come Sunday’s qualifier. However, Cristiano is the captain and his main focus will be the result and booking a ticket to Euro 2020.

Key stats

  • His tally of 98 goals for the national team came in 168 appearances.
