Report: Mourinho eyes Real Madrid managerial post should Zidane be sacked

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keeping tabs on the Real Madrid managerial job in case the Spanish club decides to part ways with current head coach Zinedine Zidane. The Portuguese manager is eyeing a return to football management after being out of action in over eight months.

Mourinho was shown the exit door in December 2018 by Manchester United following the club's poor first round in last season's Premier League. After being replaced with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the 56-year-old manager is yet to take over the reins of any football club despite reports of some top European clubs showing interest in him in months past.

At the moment, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has landed himself a punditry role on Sky Sports' Premier League show while he 'awaits' the right offer to arrive. According to Spanish publication AS, he is keen on replacing Zidane as the head coach of Real Madrid should the French manager be shown the exit door soon.

The 47-year-old manager returned to Los Blancos prior to the end of last season and is currently championing a rebuild with his side still dealing with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite recruiting the likes of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo, Zizou is reportedly unsatisfied with the business done by club president Florentino Perez as he expected Manchester United's Paul Pogba to be part of this summer's recruits.

Regardless, the former Galactico is expected to deliver the goods with the personnel available and has already accrued four points from a possible six in La Liga this season. In the meantime, Jose Mourinho is lurking in the shadows should Real Madrid decide to end its relationship with the three-time Champions League winner.
