The Ligue 1 returns this weekend and promises a lot of excitement with both the top and bottom halves of the table presenting an interesting outlook.

Action in the French LLigue 1 returns this weekend as we fast approach the end of the year. With a majority of the sides playing 14 games already this season, the league table is shaping up nicely, and a number of clubs will be eager to step up their efforts as we approach the midway point. For starters, Paris Saint-Germain will hope to extend their remarkable form when they take on Saint-Etienne after falling to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Lyon and Marseille stole all the headlines last weekend after their match was suspended when Dmitri Payet got hit with a water bottle while attempting a corner-kick. This weekend, the form travels to Montpellier in a crunchy tie whereas the latter will welcome Troyes to the Velodrome. Second-placed Nice will make an attempt at consolidating their status among the top four when they take on Metz and so will Rennes when they go up against the Lorient in an away fixture.

The excitment in the league will continue in the midweek as well with PSG set to host Nice in a clash between the top-two clubs of the competition. Third-placed Rennes, whose status could change depending on the weekend's trip to Lorient will host Lille as they defending champions look to salvage their season as soon as possible.

League standings ahead of Matchweek 15 in the Ligue 1

Top games to watch in Matchweek 13 in the Ligue 1

Nice vs Metz: Nice's pursuit for a top finish this season continues when they  play Metz in a match that could see them narrow the gap on PSG to fewer than ten points, while Metz might fall further down the standings. After losing to Montpelier in their last home fixture, they will be looking to redeem themselves as soon as possible. For the visitors, they are now positioned last in Ligue 1, three points behind Saint-Etienne in 19th place.

Saint-Etienne vs PSG: Paris Saint-Germain go to Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 on Sunday afternoon looking to rebound from their Champions League loss to Manchester City. As things currently stand, Mauricio Pochettino's team are 11 points clear at the top of the table, while Claude Puel's side is in 19th place but only one point from safety.

Marseille vs Troyes: Marseille will resume domestic action on Sunday when Troyes visit the Stade Velodrome, following the cancellation of their most recent Ligue 1 match against Lyon. Jorge Sampaoli's team had gone five games without losing until the dramatic events last weekend, climbing to fifth place in the Ligue 1 rankings, while their opponents are fighting in the bottom five.

*Keep in mind there will be midweek games taking place between December 1 and December 3.
