Tottenham took to Twitter on Thursday to unveil a new commercial partner, but the lovely announcement quickly turned into a PR nightmare as Spurs were mocked mercilessly. What makes things all the more shocking is that it was none other than their new partners that took aim at the north London giants.
The Premier League outfits announced Dulux as their first-ever official paint supplier. However, as is the norm on Twitter, rival fans latched on this tweet to troll Mourinho's side. What came as a surprise is that the British paint company joined in on the fan, taking aim at Spurs' poor defense and lack of trophies.
One Twitter user joked that Dulux can use Spurs' trophy cabinet for storing paint as the club "don't seem to put anything else in there". The paint company responded by posting an edited picture of an empty cabinet with Spurs logo and the text "unused trophy cabinet for sale".
Tottenham's new commercial partners took it up a notch when one Twitter user suggested playing Dulux's iconic Old English Sheepdog mascot in Mourinho's backline, to which they responded: "He might do a better job [than some of the defenders]."
This move won't go down well with the club as the team's lack of silverware and leaky defense have been sensitive issues for their fanbase. Dulux have since deleted those tweets, but as the saying goes, once you post something on the Internet, it cannot well and truly be erased.
Mourinho's side find themselves in the midst of a crisis, having won only once in their last five fixtures. Spurs crashed out of the UEFA Europa League, throwing away a 2-0 first-leg lead to lose 3-2 to Dinamo Zagreb. Furthermore, defeats against Arsenal and Man United, plus the 2-2 draw at Newcastle, have seen the team drop six points behind fourth-placed West Ham, with the Special One's job in north London reportedly being under danger.
