Frank Lampard's young Chelsea side will face a stern challenge as they take on serial Bundesliga winners Bayern in the round of 16 in this year's Champions League.

Preview: Chelsea vs Bayern Munich

Hosts Chelsea finally ended their frustrating run with a hard-fought win over Tottenham over the weekend to maintain their grip on fourth place. They now face a rather unwanted test against Bayern Munich, who have predictably regained top place in the Bundesliga and infamously scored a total of ten goals past Tottenham in the group stages, and this will be an interesting rematch from the 2012 final, during which Chelsea beat the Bavarians on their home turf in Munich after a penalty shootout.

Chelsea started off their group stage campaign by losing to Valencia - the first time they failed to beat the Spanish outfit in their European history - but rebounded well by going undefeated in their next five group stage matches. Unfortunately, they had to settle for second as the Spanish side still managed to top the group due to their better head-to-head record, which left them with a unfavourable draw against Bayern. Had they won their quartet, they would have gotten an easier pick in Champions League debutants Atalanta - who barely scraped into second spot behind group stage winners Manchester City.

As for Bayern Munich, they cruised through their group stage campaign and despite sacking coach Niko Kovac midway through the season, die Roten are viewed as the favorites to edge out this fixture. They made history by becoming the first German side to win all six games in their group stage campaign and are only the seventh to do so in competition history. That being said, Chelsea have a good record at home against German sides, with wins in six of their last nine fixtures, but Bayern are unbeaten in their last 12 away games in this competition and certainly will look to extend that streak this Tuesday.
