Lampard could be without a key player for the start of the season.

Chelsea's preparations for the new season have suffered a huge blow as they will be without a key man for the start of the new campaign. That player is none other than N'Golo Kante.

The French star was recovering from a knee injury and appeared on track to return in time for their opening day clash with Man United. However, the World Cup winner has suffered a setback in his road to recovery and is now a doubt for the beginning of the season, as per the Sun.

The former Leicester ace did not participate in training but there were hopes of him featuring in their upcoming friendlies in Japan. However, that will not be the case as he has been sent home from their pre-season tour.

This will be a huge worry for new boss Frank Lampard who looked to play the 28-year-old in the opener against the Red Devils. This means the Blues icon might have to rely on Jorginho despite hinting at playing the Italian in a different role than he was accustomed to under Maurizio Sarri.

Kante's issues began at the end of last season. The Frenchman was struggling with a knee injury but started in the Europa League final victory over Arsenal, nonetheless. Less than three weeks remain before the London giants travel to Old Trafford, and this means Lampard might have to make do without Kante's services.
