The race for a Champions League slot in the English Premier League has never been hotter!

While Liverpool and Manchester City are locked in a mini-battle of their own for the Premier League title, another intriguing scenario lies right below the second place on the league log. For neutrals, it is a perfect setup for the English Premier League to present viable candidates to next season's UEFA Champions League.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal suffered blows in the race for a top-four spot in the Premiership following their respective defeats to Manchester City and Wolves on Wednesday. For the Red Devils, the defeat in the local derby meant that for the first time since 1962, it has managed seven defeats in successive matches. On the other hand, Arsenal registered its first-ever defeat to Wolves in the English Premier League.

Nonetheless, the outcome of both matches does not suggest a dead end for the two English heavyweights although Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are apparently a step ahead. The former in particular, made a huge statement of intent on Tuesday as a late Christian Eriksen prevented spoils from being shared when Brighton & Hove Albion came to town.

With 70 points, Spurs have almost consolidated their top-four spot as, on paper, the three matches left should be a formality for Mauricio Pochettino's in-form side. In order to ensure complete safety, the White Lilies will be required to win at home against West Ham, away to Bournemouth and, finally, at home to Everton. However, two out of three wins could easily do the trick.

The biggest subplot could unfold among Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. Ranking in fourth, fifth and sixth with 67, 66 and 64 points respectively, the least upset could alter the face of affairs considering none of the sides has an outstanding game any longer.

For starters, the outcome of next Sunday's epic clash between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford could well paint a clear picture of what the league table should look like. Prior to the meeting between the 2008 Champions League finalists, Arsenal will attempt to outwit the Foxes inside the King Power Stadium.

Should United win at home, they will be locked on points with the Blues, whose superior goal margin will still give them an edge in the standings. In the last two games, Chelsea will take on Watford (H) and Leicester (A), Manchester United will play Huddersfield (A) and Cardiff City (H) and, finally, Arsenal will feature against Brighton (H) and Burnley (A).
