About Scottish League One

Scottish League One History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Scottish League One is the Scottish Professional Football League’s third tier division. The competition was established back in 2013 as a result of the merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League, sitting behind the Scottish Championship (2nd division) and the Premiership (top flight) in the pyramid.

A total of 10 teams participate in League One per season, with each campaign following the fall-spring schedule. League One follows the typical double round-robin format, meaning each side faces the other nine twice each season, both home and away. At the end of each term, the team with the most points wins the title and secures automatic promotion to the Scottish Championship while the last-placed side gets relegated straight to League Two.

The club that finishes second from last (9th place) enters a four-team League One playoff alongside the clubs that placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in League Two that same season. Two sides get paired against each, with the winners of those two ties then facing off to decide who gets to compete in the third division the following campaign. Similarly, the clubs that finish 2nd, 3rd, and 4th enter the Championship playoff. The runners-up and third-placed side lock horns while the fourth-placed team takes on the ninth-placed Championship club. The winners of these two fixtures then clash in the final, with the triumphant team earning a spot in the second division for the following season.
