About Taça da Liga

The Taça da Liga, also known as the Portuguese League Cup, is an annual knockout cup competition administrated by Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profesional. The tournament, founded in 2007, is contested by teams from Portugal’s top two divisions: the Primeira Liga and Liga Portugal 2.
The winner of the Taça da Liga is not awarded a spot in Europe. The competition’s format has changed over the years but one thing that has remained constant since its inception is the domination from Portugal’s heavyweights. Vitória de Setúbal won the inaugural title, beating Sporting CP on penalties in the final before Benfica went on a run of four consecutive Taca da Liga wins between 2008–09 and 2011–12. The Eagles then won three consecutive Portuguese League Cups from 2014 to 2016 following Braga’s success in 2012–13.
Porto, one of the biggest teams in the country, had to wait until 2022–23, 15 seasons after the tournament’s inception, to win the title for the first time in history. By that time, bitter rivals Benfica had seven crowns to their name while Sporting CP had four.
For the 2023-24 edition, the Taça da Liga is available to watch in Portugal on the commercial sports broadcaster Sport TV with the final being made available national wide on free to air broadcaster SIC.
