About CONCACAF Champions Cup

CONCACAF Champions Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Concacaf Champions League is the most important club competition in the Northern, Central American and Caribbean confederation. This competition is played on a yearly basis, with the winner earning a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup every year.

This tournament had its inaugural season in 1962 and has repeatedly changed its name and its format. In fact, the 2024 edition will be the first to be named Concacaf Champions Cup, after fifteen years of being named Concacaf Champions League. The winners of the most relevant league and cup competitions, along with regional winners of the Central American Cup and the Caribbean Cup enter this tournament.

Added to this change, the revamped competition will include 27 teams, out of which five will be handed byes for the Round of 16. The rest of the lot will be paired on home-and-away games to hand out the eleven remaining spots to play the proper tournament.

Over the years, this competition has been dominated by Liga MX clubs, who have won over 35 editions of this tournament. Only two teams from Costa Rica and two MLS clubs have paused Liga MX’s dominance over their rivals.

Coverage of this competition in the United States has been awarded to Fox Network, who use their linear channels and streaming platforms to cover the tournament in English. The option for Spanish-speaking users is Univisión, who also cover the tournament with their pay-tv network TUDN and streaming platform ViX to show as many games as possible. Both companies acquired broadcasting rights until 2025.
