About Campeones Cup

Campeones Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeones Cup is an annual North American tournament played by the MLS Cup champions and the winner of Liga MX’s Campeón de Campeones. The tournament is organized by the North American Football Union, a regional grouping under CONCACAF, who gave the green light to allow the tournament between these leagues to take place.

After years of working together to pair the best teams from each league against each other, MLS and Liga MX officers created this competition in 2018. It was the first of many efforts between both leagues, which included an All-Star team from Liga MX playing against MLS’ finest, and the expansion of the Leagues Cup, a tournament that included all teams from both countries. The winners of the first Campeones Cup were Liga MX team Tigres UANL.

The creation of this competition was also a result of the joint bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be played in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
