The former Juventus and Arsenal midfielder missed his kick in the shoot-out to deny the Scots a European trophy.

Eintracht Frankfurt have been crowned as champions of the 2021/2022 UEFA Europa League after defeating Rangers in Wednesday's final. After 120 minutes of football action in which the scoreline stood at 1-1, Aaron Ramsey's missed spot-kick proved to be the deciding factor as the Bundesliga club secured a 5-4 win via penalties in Seville.

It was evens before kick-off, with both clubs enduring tough tests on their respective paths to secure a spot in the final. Frankfurt had to overcome Real Betis, Barcelona and West Ham in the knockout stage while Rangers got their ticket after getting past Red Star, Sporting Braga and RB Leipzig.

After a cagey first 45 minutes, Rangers broke the deadlock inside the 57th minute. Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo capitalized on a defensive mistake and managed to glide into the Frankfurt penalty box before slotting the ball past Kevin Trapp. 12 minutes later, Rafael Borre restored parity following a momentarily lapse in concentration among the Rangers defense. The Colombian reacted quickly inside the penalty area to redirect Filip Kostic's teasing cross into the net.

The scoreline remained the same after 30 minutes of extra-time, although Rangers almost knicked the win but for Kevin Trapp's point-blank save in the 118th minute. The German shot-stopper emerged as the hero once more in the shoot-out, stopping substitute Aaron Ramsey's shot through the middle.

Prior to the former Arsenal midfielder's miss, all the seven previous takers had scored with their attempts. Kamar Roofe scored Ranger's fifth before Borre sealed the deal for the Germans with the final kick of the night. With the result, Eintracht have claim Champions League qualification for next season. Relatively, Rangers will be in qualifying rounds following the night's defeat.
