Preview: Juventus vs Lyon

The hosts come into this game in a bad patch of form. Despite winning the Scudetto, Juventus concluded the Serie A season on a rather sour note, as Maurizio Sarri's side ended up losing back-to-back games. The first was a shocking reversal against Cagliari, followed by a 3-1 home loss to Roma on the final matchday of the season. If one adds their 2-1 defeat to Udinese, Juventus ended up losing three of their final four league matches to conclude their domestic campaign. Perhaps one could argue that La Vecchia Signora had already clinched the Scudetto at that point, but the fact that Inter finished just one point behind them as a result of them dropping points showed how fortunate the Turin giants were to hang on to their title.

Additionally, they were aided by the sudden collapse of Lazio, who had pursued them all season, and that gave them the extra breathing room they needed as many fans and neutrals have noted that the team's showings aren't exactly up to the high standard they have been used to seeing.

Having lost the Coppa Italia to his former side Napoli, Sarri will be under increased pressure for Juventus to have a strong showing in the Champions League. Despite winning his first ever title in Italy, many are not satisfied with his work so far at the club, but he naturally would go a long way to alleviating any concerns if he can help Juventus end their 20 year-plus wait for the most coveted prize in European club football.

However, Juventus, who will be hosting the second leg of their round of 16 tie against Lyon, will have to overcome a 1-0 deficit when Les Gones come to town to avoid what would be another major blow for the new manager.

Lyon, for their part, will still be licking their wounds following their loss to PSG in the Coupe de la Ligue final, which went to a penalty shoot-out. Realistically, that presented the best chance at silverware for Rudi Garcia's side, who finished in seventh place during last season's Ligue 1 campaign. Still, they do hold a slim advantage thanks to a goal from Lucas Tousart, and given Juve's less than consistent form this term, will certainly be fancying their chances at nicking at least a goal at the Allianz Stadium.

Should that happen, the French side will be firmly in the driver's seat as they look to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2009/2010 term, when they beat Real Madrid to advance; it was also during that season that they made it all the way to the semi-finals.

Team news: Juventus vs Lyon

Juventus: The hosts will have to make do without Mattia De Sciglio and Douglas Costa, with the pair both on the injury list as a result of a thigh issue. In addition, key striker Paulo Dybala is a doubt for this game - also due to a thigh injury - and will have to be evaluated shortly before the clash.

Lyon: The visitors don't have any key players who are definite absentees due to injury or suspension. However, defenders Youssouf Kone and Kenny Tete have been struggling with muscular complaints and thus are considered as doubtful for the upcoming match in Turin.
