The two clubs have reportedly made a breakthrough in talks for the transfer of the Dutch midfielder.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Barcelona for top transfer target Frenkie de Jong, multiple sources have confirmed. The Red Devils have their transfer proposal of $85M (£69M) with add-ons accepted by the Catalans and will soon look to open talks with the player's camp.

United's interest in the Dutch midfielder has been an open secret for about a month and a half now and the transfer saga is said to be nearing its end. Although the player has consistently iterated his desire to stay at Camp Nou, it now looks certain that he will continue his club career at Old Trafford. This came after the Barca hierarchy approved his sale in order to lessen the burden on their club's finances.

A week ago, a report from Spain revealed that Manchester United had submitted their first official offer to Barcelona for De Jong. However, the undisclosed offer was rejected by the Catalans are it was well short of their valuation. On Thursday, an improved offer which amounts to $69M (£56M) was sent by Erik Ten Hag's side to test the resolve of the La Liga runners up. According to Marca, it was also rejected as it was still $9.8M (£8M) short of the fee wanted by the club.

On Sunday, UK publication Telegraph revealed that a deal has now been struck after United sent a third bid in the region of $85M (£69M), including add-ons. Per the report, the negotiations with both Barcelona and De Jong's camp are expected to be completed in the course of this week. The Red Devils are expected to go after several other players after wrapping up the deal for the Dutchman.
