The 2021 Major League Soccer season has reached the apex of conference play, with the Portland Timbers hosting Real Salt Lake at Providence Park on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Few people had the Timbers and RSL reaching the Western Conference semifinals in the bracket predictors. However, both sides earned their right to fight for a chance to advance to the MLS Cup Final.

Portland overcame a one-goal deficit against Minnesota United in the first round of playoffs. Defender Larrys Mabiala scored the equalizer just before halftime, and attacking midfielder Sebastian Blanco secured the win with a second-half brace.

Mabiala proved to be the difference again when the Timbers visited Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for a Western Conference semifinal game against the Colorado Rapids. The French center back scored a game-winning goal in the 90th minute. The Rapids had not lost a home game since their first home game of the season, a 3-1 loss to Austin on April 24.

On the other hand, Real Salt Lake took down No. 2 Seattle Sounders without registering a single shot on target in 120 minutes. The Claret and Cobalt frustrated the Sounders, who, despite shooting 23 times, only hit the target three. In the end, David Ochoa stopped Kelyn Rowe’s penalty to seal a spot in the Western Conference semis.

RSL faced rivals Sporting Kansas City next. Real Salt Lake went down early to a Johnny Russel goal from the penalty spot. Nonetheless, the Claret and Cobalt fought back and remained sound defensively, scoring two late goals in the process. Substitutes Anderson Julio and Bobby Wood put the game away, with Wood’s goal coming in added time.
