Preview – Molde vs Arsenal

Arsenal are gearing up for a match straight after their disappointing return from the international break, taking on Molde in the UEFA Europa League. The Gunners boast a perfect start to their European campaign and could secure a spot in the round of 32 with a win on Matchday 4, but given their recent form, fans can be forgiven for being concerned for the north London giants.

Arteta's men headed into the recent international break on the back of a shocking 3-0 loss at home to Aston Villa. In their first game back, the FA Cup holders took on Leeds in the league and, once again, failed to impress, clinging onto a goalless draw. Arsenal played a large part of that game with 10 men, with Pepe getting sent off for headbutting an opposition player in the second half, leaving the club with only one win from their last five league matches.

The sending off of the Ivorian sparked a controversy, with many taking to social media to slam the attacker. The former Lille ace was even subjected to racist abuse online, which Arsenal publicly came out to condemn. Nico has since issued an apology for his actions while Arteta has confirmed he will be involved in the Europa League game in order to make amends for his sending off.

While the Premier League giants are in the driving seat in their group, sitting top of the table with nine points out of a possible nine, Molde are not that far off. The Norwegian outfits boast six points and despite losing at the Emirates Stadium, they put in an excellent first half performance against their rivals and should thus be confident of upsetting Arsenal.

Team news

Molde: The home side are without the services of Ohi Omoijuanfo, meaning Leke James could deputize.

Arsenal: The Gunners are without several key players, with Saka and Willian picking up injuries in the draw with Leeds. Elneny and Kolasinac are still recovering from COVID-19 while Partey has not yet returned from his thigh injury. Nketiah and Willock should remain in the lineup and could be joined by Maitland-Niles, Nelson, and Smith Rowe.

Key stats

  • Norwegian clubs have lost their last four home clashes with English clubs.

  • Arsenal have lost only once in their last 14 group stage European matches.
