An all important clash awaits Manchester United on Monday night as a favorable result against Southampton will significantly boost the Red Devils' chance of playing in the Champions League next season. A win at Old Trafford will lift Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men right into third place - a position that could be guaranteed should they be victorious in all the remaining fixtures. This was made possible by the fact that rivals Chelsea and Leicester City dropped points in their respective Matchday 35 encounter with Sheffield United and Bournemouth.
Manchester United relish the opportunity presented to them and while they came up against an in-form Southampton side, their status as favorites for the upcoming test cannot be overemphasized. A remarkable run has seen the Red Devils go 17 games without tasting defeat. 13 of those games have been won while the remaining four have been drawn.
While at it, the 13-time Premier League champions have shut shop at the back, conceding as little as possible. Across the same number of games, they have picked the ball out of their net just six times, three of which came in the last four outings.
With the stakes being as high as ever, a win is the only thing on the minds of the United brigade although a performance better what resulted in the 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture with Southampton earlier this season.
For Southampton, it is all about playing for professional pride. The Saints are mathematically safe from being relegated, thanks to a three-game unbeaten run. This included a shocking 1-0 win over former champions Manchester City and a draw with Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side.
Bar the 2-0 defeat suffered at the hands of Arsenal after the league was restarted, Southampton has won three and drawn one of the five games played over the period. This is certainly a step up from their two wins in five games before the resumption.
Having failed to beat Manchester United in any of the last seven meetings, the current form of Ralph Hasenhuttl's men offers optimism for a potential upset at Old Trafford.
Manchester United vs Southampton Head to head
Manchester United have been victorious in 26 of the last 41 Premier League meetings with Southampton. The Saints have secured only seven wins along with eight draws.
In the most recent meeting, Vestergaard's header was enough to cancel out Daniel James' opener and ensure that spoils were shared after Kevin Danso got sent off.
Manchester United enters the encounter with neither of their starters sidelined with an injury. At the moment, only Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are out of contention.
Relatively, Southampton will approach the encounter with the likes of Sofiane Boufal, Yan Valery, Nathan Tella and Moussa Djenepo are out with injuries. The availability of Jannik Vestergaard also remains uncertain as he faces a late fitness test.
