Chelsea ramp up their pre-season preparations as they take on La Liga champions and familiar foes Barcelona on Tuesday, July 23rd. Can Frank Lampard's side recover after a loss last week?

Preview: Barcelona vs Chelsea

Barcelona have arrived in Japan to take part in the 2019 Rakuten Cup along with Japanese side Vissel Kobe and Chelsea and Ernesto Valderde will be keen on giving some playing time to his new acquisitons, namely big signing Antoine Griezmann who recently joined the Blaugrana from fellow La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are already in Japan and come into this game having lost 1-0 to local side Kawasaki Frontale. It was a setback for Lampard's side, who had previously earned cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over St. Patrick's, and he'll be hoping that was just a minor blip as he was missing several players due to illness ahead of that game.

It's also set to be a very interesting match for Chelsea's Pedro, as he spent well over a decade on Barcelona's books from 2004 to 2015, making his professional debut in 2008 and won three Champions League titles (as well as five La Liga trophies, among others) before leaving the club in 2015. This will be the second friendly encounter between the Blaugrana and the Blues, but of course, they're quite familiar with each other on the competitive front, having faced each other over a dozen times (15 to be precise).

This will be Barcelona's first pre-season game of the year, while Chelsea will be featuring in their fourth match since Frank Lampard took over after Maurizio Sarri guided them to victory in the Europa League at the expense of Arsenal last May.

Team news: Barcelona vs Chelesa

Barcelona: New players like Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie De Jong could make their debuts in this game. Star men Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, however, are still on their extended holidays following their participation in the Copa America. Philippe Coutinho is another who has been given time off after his side won the competition - although the Brazilian has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou this summer.

Chelsea: Both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Tammy Abraham were unable to feature against Kawasaki Frontale due to illness. N'Golo Kante had to head back to the UK due to a flare-up of a knee issue and the team are still missing Antonio Rudiger and Ruben Loftus-Cheek due to an injury problem.
