The Blues saw their top four hopes dashed following a defeat to Everton in Sunday's Premier League clash.

Senior figures at Chelsea Football Club have reportedly held discussions regarding the future of manager Maurizio Sarri, Sky Sports has revealed. The Italian manager's position is apparently threatened following Sunday's Premier League defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

A goal apiece by Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson for the Toffees prevented the Blues from breaking into the top four ahead of the international break. The glitch was a second in a matter of league games as the Blues failed secure maximum points at home to Wolves in the previous outing. Spoils were shared between the two after a late strike by Eden Hazard which canceled out Raul Jimenez's opener.

Momentarily, Chelsea ranks sixth on the league table with 57 points – three points off the fourth position which is being occupied by Arsenal. Following the end of proceedings at Everton on Sunday, Sarri asserted that he did not understand how his side failed to get the result after dominating at the initial stage game.

"I don't know [what happened]," the Italian told Sky Sports in his post-match interview.

"The players don't know what happened and at the moment I can't explain the change.

"We played, in my opinion, the best first half of the season and we could have scored four or five times and then suddenly we stopped playing.

"It is very strange. We stopped to defend and to counter-attack, everything. [We became] another team, I don't know.

"We only had to continue. We were in control of the match. We played very well, we defended very well.

"We needed to continue and by the end of the second half we didn't play, without defending. It is strange. I cannot understand."

Nonetheless, in the wake of the development, Sky sources claim that the Chelsea hierarchy has met to discuss the way forward with Sarri. As per the UK publication, the club feels "concerned and disappointed about the team's performances this season".
