Wolves vs Man City – Preview

Man City kick off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign on Monday with a tricky away test vs Wolves. After the disappointment that was 2019/20, the Citizens have one goal on their mind and that is to reclaim the English top-flight crown. Guardiola’s men have not yet kicked a ball this season but the pressure is already on the Spaniard tactician to deliver.

Due to their long but unsuccessful European campaign, De Bruyne and Co – alongside neighbors Man Utd – were given extra days of rest and were thus exempt from playing in the opening round. As a result, however, Man City have watched reigning champions and bitter rivals Liverpool win twice, moving six points ahead. Yes, the Reds have played a game extra and yes, the Citizens need simply two beat Wolves and win their game-in-hand to keep pace with Klopp’s men but should the Etihad Stadium side stumble against Raul Jimenez and Co, concern will arise.

Nuno’s men began the season in epic fashion, taking on and taking apart Sheffield United in round 1. Raul Jimenez and Romain Saïss got on the scoresheet, leading their club to a crucial 2-0 away win. Man City will be a whole different prospect regardless of the home advantage, as they will be tasked with stopping the best midfielder in the world in the form of De Bruyne.

Man City were heavily keen on adding Lionel Messi to their already-deadly lineup but missed out on the Argentine icon. Regardless, Guardiola has enough talent at his disposal. The question is can he get the Citizens back to their best? Wolves will be the first test.

Team news

Wolves: Nuno doesn’t have many concerns heading into this tie. In fact, expect the Portuguese tactician to name a near-identical lineup to the one that beat Sheffield on Matchday 1. This game comes to soon for newly-signed Ki-Jana Hoever while Diogo Jota has left the club for Liverpool and will no longer partner Jimenez in attack. Jonny, meanwhile, remains sidelined due to a knee injury.

Man City: The Citizens’ biggest absentee is Sergio Aguero. The Argentine goalscoring machine remains sidelined and looks to be out for “one or two monts”, according to Guardiola. Laporte will also sit this one out as he has only recently joined the squad after contracting the coronavirus. Ilkay Gundogan has pulled out after testing positive for COVID-19 but Riyad Mahrez has recovered and is clear to feature. New boys Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres are available to debut.

Key stats

  • The Citizens have lost four times in their last seven trips to the Molineux Stadium (W2, D1).

  • Wolves could secure a third consecutive top-flight win over Man City for the first time since October 1961.

  • Nuno’s side might have pulled off the league double over Guardiola’s men last season but Pep has never lost three games in a row against one team in his entire career.

  • Man City have won their last nine opening games to the Premier League season and look to become the first club to win 10 in a row.
