Coronavirus: Real Madrid, Inter, Bayern announce European Solidarity Cup to raise funds for medical facilities

The footballing world have been playing their part in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic through charitable measures, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan now uniting for another honorable move. These three European giants will take part in a solidarity cup that aims to raise funds for healthcare workers, who are at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19.

Titled just that, the European Solidarity Cup, Los Blancos announced on their official website that this tournament will take place in 2021. A particular kick-off date has not been set. The reason for this is that this event aims to have fans in the stand, meaning it will only take place when health authorities deem it safe to welcome back supporters to football stadiums.

This cup will be a three-match affair. Each participant will face the other two sides, with the three games being split across the three contestants' homes. Real Madrid vs Inter Milan will take place in Madrid while Inter Milan and FC Bayern will face off in Milan and FC Bayern and Real Madrid lock horns in Munich.

"Real Madrid C. F. are set to team up with FC Bayern and Inter Milan to host the European Solidarity Cup in 2021," the official statement on the Spanish giants' website read. "The three clubs will come together to send out a message of solidarity and fraternity to the people of Europe."

"The proceeds from these games will go towards the purchase of healthcare resources in Italy and Spain," they added.

"Healthcare staff who continue to fight the pandemic will be represented at all of the games. The three clubs wish to demonstrate to these heroes all of our solidarity, respect and gratitude."

Spain and Italy are one of the two worst-hit countries in European. However, things are slowly improving for the two continental powerhouses. Germany's handling of the pandemic has been deemed as one of the best in the world and as a result, their top-flight league the Bundesliga made its return over the weekend. La Liga and Serie A, meanwhile, are aiming to return next month.
